New Cube World Video: Improved Combat



I made some changes to the combat system:

There are no more combo points but an energy called 'spirit'. Each attack generates spirit points (SP) which you can unleash with a finishing move. The finishing move depends on your weapons:
- Dual-wielding: Swirl
- Two-handed: Smash
- Shield: Slam

You will find different kinds of spirits (small cubes) that you can attach to your weapons and armor, each with a different effect. For instance if you add a fire spirit (red cube) to your weapon, your finish move will deal fire damage. If you add an unholy spirit (green cube), your finishing move will drain life from your enemies and heal you. You can also attach multiple spirits for a combined effect.

Depending on the spirits your weapons will glow in different colors. In the video spirits are not implemented yet - I just made the weapons glow yellow.

Do you think your gonna improve on combat even more, cause right now it kinda looks like you hold down left click and wait, then occasionally hit another button to do a different attack. Like are you every gonna try to make combat more like the monster hunter games where there are multiple different combos you can do depending on your weapon choice. (Somewhere i read that your inspired a little by monster hunter.

I would love to see some kinda of European Long-sword style weapon, or maybe a Katana. Some sort of 2 handed sword.

Your tweet about this ended up being my 2,000th =P Anyway, it looks like it's coming along great. The spirits are definitely a unique way for going about enhancing weapons. Sort of like augmentations or runes for example, but a different idea from the norm.

It must be pretty cool making a video of your game and seeing how far you've come compared to the beginning of Cube World.

What I think is missing is proper knockback system. All I'm currently seeing is stale button mashing. The weapons and enemies need to knock your opponents back further the stronger they are. The stronger weapon need longer delay from each attack. Weapons need to actually be a physical obstruction, which would stop players from just walking RIGHT into an enemy and pressing attack like shown in the video.

I'm not implying that it's completely bad, those are just my nitpicks which would really help improve the combat system from mere button mashing.

You should add a button to dodge, dodge could move the character very quickly in one direction, so we could anticipate the attacks of the opponent and dodge them.

I doubt that the bow and arrow was removed. If anything it could be under development, maybe FIRE arrows?

(for those who dont know, its when you block an attack with an attack. this either leaves both combatants or the one who attacked first stunned for just a little bit.)

I completely respect that your taking your time with this epic game, but alas, I am weak...So are you planning to make an alpha\beta, or are you going to release it and then continue updating it? And if you are going to just release it then update it, are you planning to release it in 2012? Please respond. :)

Totally agree with you but as far as attack delays go I think that a weight system would be better that simply more powerful attack equals a longer delay.

The combat looks too shallow and button mashy for me.

There should be some sort of stamina bar that depletes as you attack, but refills relatively quickly, which would lead to fewer, but more meaningful, and better timed hits.

Or maybe add proper combos, like left slash-right slash-(short pause)-overheadslash-with-small-aoe(medium pause before next string) for a 2 handed sword, instead of aimlessly swinging the weapon left and right.

This could also lead to a system where you can learn, or customize your combos, and levelling up could increase your stamina bar so that you'll be able to learn better and longer combos before running out.

And the special attack meter should still stay.

Ich nehm an die normalen z.B. Eisenwürfel gibts aber immer noch? Dann fänd ich auch so passive Seelen (spirits) gut, die z.B. die die Stärke von Streitkolben verbessern, oder die Laufgeschwindigkeit^^ Und was hälst du von einer Schleichen/Kriechen-Funktion, die den Spieler schwerer zu entdecken sein lässt, aber auch gleichzeitig verwundbarer?

That is extremely nice, i think the combat is very fluid, feels nice doesnt have many dlaws! Who says there cant be button mashing? Has no one ever heard of god of war? Looks amazing! Keep up the good work

I don't like the new combat system.

It's less based on movement and coordination, and more based on mindlessly bashing the enemy. I liked the push-back combat system he has before. I liked the idea of having to chase down your enemies after a strong hit (because a strong hit would push them back, physically).

Was enventuell net wäre, wenn die die Finishingmoves die umgebeung mit zerstören (z.B. Slam). So wie der eine Schreiter in deinem Video.

Im having mixed feelings on this one.. Its a cool system, but getting a bit more like a beat em up game where button mashing is the key.. A comment before this stated having knockback systems and delays.. That would be good.. Wollay, one quick question.. What or how does this combat system work with long ranged weapons like the bow and arrow and (if there is) other ranged weapons?

I just saw this video, and I like it a lot. The combat system looks fluid, a warm ...I really want to learn to program such a trophy. I learned C + + but I can not create aworld, cube or something. It is a normal because I have not much experience. I wantto know, you built this game alone or with others?And then ... Would it be possible to provide test this game?

Wow this is one action and content packed video!

I just L-O-V-E how the character handles the weapons and how they carry them in non-combat!

The new Experience, Health and Spirit bars look neat.
Implementing a finishing move is a great idea!

I see some people complaining about knock-back.
But i personally think this will be a part of the game that makes it 'the game'.
Your finishing move appears to have some knock-back and since you gather up your
'spirit' quite fast i don't really see the problem. :P

Using the spirits to give your weapons a special effect is cool and it adds more to just a simple special attack, but I do think it needs...'more'.
I think that people will get bored pretty fast of just the same thing over and over again.
hit hit hit special, hit hit hit special, hit hit hit special, etc. etc.

You may want to add another special which you can unlock by leveling your skill or weapon level.
With multiple options people can chose what to do in the current situation, thus implementing some sort of strategy to the fight!

The fight with the Troll was very impressive, how he simply destroyed the battlefield with each blow is still amazing!
I like how you have improved them since you first introduced them. (in the first video with a troll he kinda dug himself a grave to chill in while you kill him :P)

As for closers:
1 Thing that i will beg you to show us is the use of bow & arrow.
We have seen allot of swords, shields and maces, but I also would like to see how you have made the bow & arrow!

Again i a rattling on, In the end, i just am too exited about this game. :P

do you think it might be best if you sale it in alpha or in beta so you get a lot more money , and marketing wise  you be flooded with buyers. and updates will keep the customers entertained , after the first 2 -3 week .

Lame. fighting with the knock-back looked so epic, and like it took a lot of skill.  probably the thing i was looking forward to the most, now it just looks like a grind-sim, like WoW of something.

You could still have the knock-back with spirit thing, and just make Smash and Slam do massive amounts of knock-back.

but if it stays as is on release, I'm just going to be utterly disappointed.

Thanks for your suggestions. I'm still balancing knock-back. Too much knock-back is a little annoying when fighting big groups of monsters, that's why I reduced it. By the way: finishers like swirl, smash and shield slam do a big amount of knock-back depending on how much spirit you have.

Its just the old combat had such a Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon feel.
were the emphasis was on dodging and getting in a well timed blow.

and that seemed like it would work well with the new charge system.


(Or i guess more like bumper cars beating the crap out of each other...
but that still looked like a lot more fun than just standing there)

Maybe make knock back dependent on armor. a heave tank man should just stand there and take it, while a nimble ninja should be flying all over the place.

The instant healing power of the purple mushroom item looks pretty overpowered. I think you should either have a cool-down time on healing items or have them heal a certain amount over a certain period of time (like the health potions in Diablo). If the mushrooms are common, I'd say you should nerf them, however, if they are more rare it makes sense for them to be how they are now.

This looks fantastic.  Seeing the way that troll tears up the terrain make me think that down the road you could give high-level characters and monsters some amazing terrain-altering magic.  Like spells that create huge craters or fissures or that raise up huge walls of earth or rock.

Have you ever seen the old Bullfrog game Magic Carpet?  (Or more recently, an indie game called Caster?)

Is your procedurally generated landscape solid voxels (punctured by caverns) all the way down to the bottom of the world the way Minecraft is?

First of all i love the spirit idea. I do think thought that insead of always having it hit hit hit hit hit special. maybe add some crazy moves like spinning and crazy attacks. people will love it if you have crazy spinning attacks. and if you have certain keys that you can press to make certain attacks possible. Hope you take this into consideration.

p.s .I really want an alpha of this game or at least a demo. Please get this game out once you do maybe a little more. You can always just keep adding updates. Hope you get this game out soon.

You're realy making a great game, but combo sounded better, like when we hack tons of hits on fighting or hacknslash games (since this "spirit" thing is in tons of games , most boring).
Well, just a idea, create a quest to make some kind of "rival" to appear randomly on missions, also deflecting arrows with the shield would be cool xD

Wollay, I'm really looking forward to Cube World's release and will buy it the second it becomes available.  Judging from the combat video though, what looks like "lack of friction" (for lack of a better term), kind of turns me off.  It looks like the player character is on ice, jumping and gliding around.  Maybe I'm wrong, but it looks like you're having trouble focusing on your enemies and you're running back and forth just to target a bad guy.  Thoughts?
