Screenshots: Caves & Quests
Thanks for your feedback about the building feature. Today I'm just showing some screenshots of the caves that I recently added, together with a new quest type.
Looks great, but the NPC sounds like she has already been inside the cave before she gives the quest to the player (which would be very odd, since she could just have got the artifact herself). I think she should rather introduce herself as archeologist, who has found a treasure map or allusions to artifacts in that cave.
why wouldn't she have taken the artifact if she has been there? and asking for the player to "analyse" just sounds weird, why not gather more info about it or something else
While we're at it then, there is also an error in the last screen. At the beginning it says 'Long time ago' where it should have said 'A long time ago'.
Sorry for nitpicking. Other than that and Obsidian (which you've already fixed), it's perfect. :)
It feels like you're posting a lot more content the last few days. Does that mean you've just been saving up content for the last few weeks or are you making Cube World your primary focus (as opposed to working for Mojang or elsewhere) and we can expect to see new content every few days.
Regardless, I'm grateful for what you've shared so far and cannot wait to see where you take this project. Keep at it!
this game looks better and better with each update! any chance you could make a short video next time? so we can see the architecture and caves and whatever you might have up your sleeve in motion?
I like everything exept destructible environment for the following reasons: 1. This is not minecraft, I have minecraft, I like minecraft, when I want to play minecraft I will play it. 2. It adds an ugly permanent hole to the landscape. 3. If you fall in the ugly hole you cant get out because you don't have enough climbing skill. 4. This is still not minecraft.
I have a different idea of how exploration, the house, the minimap and enemy difficulty should be. 1. You do not build or expand your house, it is already there and you spawn in it. You can fill your house with trophies, swag, and loot from your adventures. 2. Instead of a minimap, in the top right corner you should have a compass that points towards your house and away from your house. 3. The farther away you get from your house the more difficult and numerous the enemies will be. 4. When you die your high score could be the distance from your house you went.
1. And.. so? 2. Well, ugliness is something subjective ;) 3. You have all the climbing skills you'll never need. Read older posts to know about climbing 4. What's your problem? o.O
i don't understant... so we are able to break blocks like minecraft or not ? i mean dont have blocks in the inventory but are we able to destroy blocks ?
Well indeed it is shit ^^, the only good idea is "the farther away, the stronger" which is already going to be implemented -_- so pointless comment ^^ such is this comment and if you are still reading you are lifeless :p just kidding but maybe i'am not kidding mwahhahaha sorry -_-
I noticed in the images that the amera was in front of the character, does the camera always change in perspective when entering caves and can you switch it to face behind your character?
I am not sure if this was changed or not but it would be great that when your in first person view that you shouldnt be able to see your character still.
I already talked to wollay via email, he said a quad core 3.2 GHz processor with 4 GB DDR3 with a Radeon HD series will be enough to run it on the most demanding options
The caves look good so far and I really love the artifacts. Later on, you should make the quests more different instead of just "Kill 5 Goblins." "Collect this and that." Legend of Zelda did a great job on that, although they were a bit repeatable with the Temples/Dungeons.
I'm loving this game :)! You should do as minecraft and let people pre-purchase it in alpha mode and continue developing. Looking forward to buy it and play it!
Sehr cooles neues Webseitendesign. Endlich mehr breite für die Beiträge. Finde deine letzten Ideen, also Quests, Höhlen, Biome durch Temperaturen und Bauen echt genial. Du hast ja letztens nach Ideen für die Rohstoffbeschaffung gesucht. Mein Vorschlag wäre ein Händler bei dem man für eine Währung versch. Rohstoffe kaufen kann (variierende Rohstoffe je Baustiel/Gebäudeteil).
Hoffe es kommt in absehbarer Zeit ne alpha oder beta. Hab echt Bock dein Game zu zocken. Trotzdem solltest du dir so viel Zeit nehmen wie du brauchst um aus deinem Game das beste herauszuholen.

Why the negative comments guys?? Geeez... In my opinion, wollay did a great job in this.. I look at the screenshots and i really get the cave-y ambiance.. Hey wollay, is that a minimap right there in the upper right? What about making it into a sonar or radar like in caves.. Or initially, without the proper equipments or gears, the minimap wont work at all in caves.. That would be good...
I agree with both of you but I think this can be resolved pretty fast with just a slight change. ex. 'yesterday I explored some caves in tala plain. I found an artifact! but I got ambushed by a lot of zombies when I went near it.' This is basicly just a change in lore and storytelling.
Hey blog, I came up with a good idea today let me know what you guys think.
1. In skyrim or fable there is the whole system of if you kill people you are not liked or become evil. Well what if we brought that element into this game.
2. Like quests where you have to preform assassinations on a traveler or villager, but that would make you un-liked by the village. Maybe to the point where the people in the village will not give you any quests or such. But on the other hand the quest giver would give you either a good sum of money or a powerful weapon. One assassination would not kick you out from the village and if you are a bad assassin and get caught you would have to pay a bounty.
3. Now also you could do good deeds such as rescue a dog/child from a cave and you would be rewarded in honor. Doing good quests in general would make you earn honor.
4. That brings me to another point. Adding an honer system in the game. Kind of like world of warcraft where you can earn honor for really good weapons, add an honor system that when you earn enough honor you will choose to receive a rare weapon. And there should be benchmarks as to how much honor you need to receive these weapons/armor/spells.
5. Also I thought of creating groups of people. For example have like an assassins group called "The Forsaken" and they would be a group that lived in one main village but there could be other members in other villages that will introduce you to the group, and if you are already part of the group he would give you assassinations to carry out. Same thing for the good side, maybe create "Noble Heroes" who would have their own village/castle where their main base camp is.
If you would like to comment, to make it easier on readers you could put the number of the paragraph you would like to comment on. And please, let's try to make this game as awesome as it can be! o)-<
I think this is a good quest but mabye some of the ''get this thing'' quest could start a follow up quest. Like the next quest could be something and the one after that to go and get the blade. Just an idea :P
Wollay weißt du schon was die Artefakte bringen sollen? und ich wolte mal Fragen ws du dir noch so an Waffen vorgestellt hast. Ich würde mir wünschen das es richtige Speere/Lanzen/Hellebarden geben würde :D
In a twitter to me he said he runs it on a laptop with a Core I5 2430 dual core @2.4ghz, 6gb of ram, and a HD6750m graphics card. With the smooth recording in his video's I'm going to guess that the minimum is quite a bit lower than this.
Do you plan on adding something, like an item, that allows you to repair holes made by enemies? I'm not asking for the ability to place blocks like in Minecraft, I just would like to be able to go back and make the landscape look nice again after large battles. I don't want the monsters ability to make holes to be completely removed, because it could add a lot of variety to fights.

Die Artefakte sind in Hoehlen und Dungeons versteckt und man muss sie fuer Quests finden. Ausserdem sind auf ihnen Gehemnisse ueber die Cube World eingraviert.
Erkläre uns bitte was es mit der Statue im ersten Bild vor sich hat? Ist es eine dieser Spawn Statuen von denen du erzählt hattest. Es wär wirklich gut wenn du ein skill System erstellst auf dem all deine ausführbahren Aktionen basieren. Eine ingame Währung wäre auch sehr nützlich! Und hast du eigentlich schon eine große Karte programmiert, auf der man all die Erkundeten Orte sehen kann, eingebaut?
Du kannst wirklich stolz auf deine monatelange Arbeit sein!!
Can we have a weapon builder like a house builder? Maybe certain quests allow you to create your own weapons... You get some resources like "Dragon scale" and "Obsidian Chunks" and "Wooden Planks" and you can make a weapon from it? Like "Dragon Blade" "Obsidian Hilt" "Wooden Handle"...?
Also, can you maybe add mining but mmorpg style? Were there are specific spots you can mine, not like minecraft where you just destroy everything...
Don't have mod support for cube world and don't let there be programs that let you edit your inventory or level or anything. Also, It would be awesome if you could place the artefact inside your home ^^ Don't get lazy with cube world because it's a great game and I hope you will always make updates for it.

Or maybe the sword was in the mouth of the cave and she was too scared to go in- because she's not an adventurer. So she gives you the quest to go to the belly of the cave and look for more clues. Bam, you find out what's going on.
Looks great! But the caves are a bit...1 colored. You could add different types of stone/dirt/material, flowing water and maybe some cave-plants(mushrooms?) to color them up a bit.
On a side note, for a cave the floor is ridiculously flat! :o
As mentioned by a anonymous user, the quest is a bit weird. Basically she's telling: 'I found something shiny yesterday! go look at it!'
So the quest goes like this?: NPC: Go look at shiny object! Player: uuuhhh...ok? *goes into cave *Gives every monster a blade to the chest *looks at shiny object *Achievement get! look at shiny object! *reports back NPC: how was it? Player: very shiny NPC Awesome! here's some xp! Player: Cool
In the last screen-shot it looks like you're picking it up, so do you retrieve it or leave it there? If she send you to retrieve it, why didn't she do it herself in the first place?
If you retrieve it then it would be more logical if you put it in the light of: NPC is a archaeologist, knows artifact is there but cannot retrieve it because of blocked/obstructed/dangerous/filled with monsters cave. Or something like that. :P
Personally i don't own the game, so i might be missing some points completely, please excuse me if i do.
The caves are looking good! But they are a bit...boring. There is only 1 color in the walls and the floor is kinda...flat? Some obstructions, uneven floors or some things that you might need to bridge over would add to the atmosphere! You could add special items, cave-plants(mushrooms?), dripping/flowing water, different kinds of rock/dirt/material to the cave to give them some more color.
As mentioned before by anonymous, the quest giver is basically telling you this: "I found something shiny! go look at it!"
So the quest goes like this?: NPC: I found a cave yesterday with a shiny artifact inside! go look at it! Player: Eeehhh...ok? *walks in cave *gives monsters a blade to the chest *looks at shiny artifact *Achievement get! Look at shiny object! *reports back NPC: What did it look like? Player: Very shiny. NPC: AWESOME! here is some xp! Thanks!
I don't know if you actually retrieve the artifact, i see the player pick it up in the last screen-shot, but why leave it there if you can take it with you?
The NPC being a archaeologist, knowing there is a artifact but unable to retrieve it since the cave is filled with monsters/dangerous/obstructed would be more logical. She can reward you with whatever for helping her, in her quest of finding all artifacts leading to the obsidian blade.
I don't know what your plans for the development of the quest towards the obsidian blade are, in the end it's up to you to decide.
Personally, i don't own the game, so i might be missing some points completely, please forgive me if i do. :P
How do you prototype your characters? like do you sit in an external tool of some kind get their composition the way you like them and then programmatically add them into the game?
The progress is really fast and amazing to see on this game. A reason to feature it in a recent blogpost concerning the most promising indie titles in development. :)
Do these artifacts by any chance unlock the ability to obtain said 'obsidian blade' or other rare items? Anyway, those are some nice caves you got there, but how do you get out? Those walls seem more than vertical, is appears you would need to break some of the blocks to escape. Also, is it possible for the minimap to show an underground view when you're underground, so it's not 'uselessly' (You could use it as a reference, mabye) showing the surface while your down there.
wollay great fan from norway here :D. this can be a bad idea. but can you make a adventurer's house: it is a house with many peoples that are adventurer like you. and they have special abilities, like good at bow, dual-wield, 2-hand and treasure finding something like that. and you can pay them to go with you or you can chat with them that they become to friends. and you can make the adventurer come with you for free.
but in the adventurer's house, it is a woman/man behind the disk, that have heard some rumors in the town. and the woman/man say who she/he heard the rumors from. and when you get the quest. you go to the place she/he heard the rumor, and when you reach the position it is a woman/man that is standing there. and you ask she/he about the rumor, and then she/he tell you the story. and this quest is linked to more quest.
you dont need to take this idea into the game. but it would be awsome if you did <3

I haven't seen anything about this subject yet, so I was wondering. Have you thought about NPC companions like on Secret of Mana or Dragon Age? They could even live at your house!
you should make underwater caves that you can swim through that lead to air pockets and other caves that you can explore. kinda like in the movie the sanctum!

Yes, they're saved separately and can be transferred between worlds.
Do you have a final release date for a "pre-alpha" game ?

Hmmm..... The FAQ was made about 1.5-1.8 months ago. That means the game shouls be released soon. Oh man, can't wait, my heads gonna explode.

This game is really colorful which is what I think is really unique about this game.

One assassination would not kick you out from the village and if you are a bad assassin and get caught you would have to pay a bounty.
3. Now also you could do good deeds such as rescue a dog/child from a cave and you would be rewarded in honor. Doing good quests in general would make you earn honor.
4. That brings me to another point. Adding an honer system in the game. Kind of like world of warcraft where you can earn honor for really good weapons, add an honor system that when you earn enough honor you will choose to receive a rare weapon. And there should be benchmarks as to how much honor you need to receive these weapons/armor/spells.
5. Also I thought of creating groups of people. For example have like an assassins group called "The Forsaken" and they would be a group that lived in one main village but there could be other members in other villages that will introduce you to the group, and if you are already part of the group he would give you assassinations to carry out. Same thing for the good side, maybe create "Noble Heroes" who would have their own village/castle where their main base camp is.

I think this is a good quest but mabye some of the ''get this thing'' quest could start a follow up quest. Like the next quest could be something and the one after that to go and get the blade. Just an idea :P

Basically expect it to be like Minecraft, there are no real specs yet on what is required run what.
In a twitter to me he said he runs it on a laptop with a Core I5 2430 dual core @2.4ghz, 6gb of ram, and a HD6750m graphics card. With the smooth recording in his video's I'm going to guess that the minimum is quite a bit lower than this.

I'm not asking for the ability to place blocks like in Minecraft, I just would like to be able to go back and make the landscape look nice again after large battles. Don't add mods like on minecraft because it would ruin the point of quests.

Die Artefakte sind in Hoehlen und Dungeons versteckt und man muss sie fuer Quests finden. Ausserdem sind auf ihnen Gehemnisse ueber die Cube World eingraviert.

Es wär wirklich gut wenn du ein skill System erstellst auf dem all deine ausführbahren Aktionen basieren. Eine ingame Währung wäre auch sehr nützlich! Und hast du eigentlich schon eine große Karte programmiert, auf der man all die Erkundeten Orte sehen kann, eingebaut?

Can we have a weapon builder like a house builder? Maybe certain quests allow you to create your own weapons... You get some resources like "Dragon scale" and "Obsidian Chunks" and "Wooden Planks" and you can make a weapon from it? Like "Dragon Blade" "Obsidian Hilt" "Wooden Handle"...?
Also, can you maybe add mining but mmorpg style? Were there are specific spots you can mine, not like minecraft where you just destroy everything...
Don't have mod support for cube world and don't let there be programs that let you edit your inventory or level or anything.
Also, It would be awesome if you could place the artefact inside your home ^^
Don't get lazy with cube world because it's a great game and I hope you will always make updates for it.

Or maybe the sword was in the mouth of the cave and she was too scared to go in- because she's not an adventurer. So she gives you the quest to go to the belly of the cave and look for more clues. Bam, you find out what's going on.

But the caves are a bit...1 colored.
You could add different types of stone/dirt/material, flowing water and maybe some cave-plants(mushrooms?) to color them up a bit.
On a side note, for a cave the floor is ridiculously flat! :o
As mentioned by a anonymous user, the quest is a bit weird.
Basically she's telling:
'I found something shiny yesterday! go look at it!'
So the quest goes like this?:
NPC: Go look at shiny object!
Player: uuuhhh...ok?
*goes into cave
*Gives every monster a blade to the chest
*looks at shiny object
*Achievement get! look at shiny object!
*reports back
NPC: how was it?
Player: very shiny
NPC Awesome! here's some xp!
Player: Cool
In the last screen-shot it looks like you're picking it up, so do you retrieve it or leave it there?
If she send you to retrieve it, why didn't she do it herself in the first place?
If you retrieve it then it would be more logical if you put it in the light of:
NPC is a archaeologist, knows artifact is there but cannot retrieve it because of blocked/obstructed/dangerous/filled with monsters cave.
Or something like that. :P

The caves are looking good!
But they are a bit...boring.
There is only 1 color in the walls and the floor is kinda...flat?
Some obstructions, uneven floors or some things that you might need to bridge over would add to the atmosphere!
You could add special items, cave-plants(mushrooms?), dripping/flowing water, different kinds of rock/dirt/material to the cave to give them some more color.
As mentioned before by anonymous, the quest giver is basically telling you this:
"I found something shiny! go look at it!"
So the quest goes like this?:
NPC: I found a cave yesterday with a shiny artifact inside! go look at it!
Player: Eeehhh...ok?
*walks in cave
*gives monsters a blade to the chest
*looks at shiny artifact
*Achievement get! Look at shiny object!
*reports back
NPC: What did it look like?
Player: Very shiny.
NPC: AWESOME! here is some xp! Thanks!
I don't know if you actually retrieve the artifact, i see the player pick it up in the last screen-shot, but why leave it there if you can take it with you?
The NPC being a archaeologist, knowing there is a artifact but unable to retrieve it since the cave is filled with monsters/dangerous/obstructed would be more logical.
She can reward you with whatever for helping her, in her quest of finding all artifacts leading to the obsidian blade.
I don't know what your plans for the development of the quest towards the obsidian blade are, in the end it's up to you to decide.
Personally, i don't own the game, so i might be missing some points completely, please forgive me if i do. :P

Do these artifacts by any chance unlock the ability to obtain said 'obsidian blade' or other rare items?
Anyway, those are some nice caves you got there, but how do you get out? Those walls seem more than vertical, is appears you would need to break some of the blocks to escape.
Also, is it possible for the minimap to show an underground view when you're underground, so it's not 'uselessly' (You could use it as a reference, mabye) showing the surface while your down there.

but in the adventurer's house, it is a woman/man behind the disk, that have heard some rumors in the town. and the woman/man say who she/he heard the rumors from. and when you get the quest. you go to the place she/he heard the rumor, and when you reach the position it is a woman/man that is standing there. and you ask she/he about the rumor, and then she/he tell you the story. and this quest is linked to more quest.
you dont need to take this idea into the game. but it would be awsome if you did <3

i got the idea from skyrim and cube world :D
You can add horses to ride and go fast to house / npc village, etc :P (like zelda, you cant ride them into a cave)
I haven't seen anything about this subject yet, so I was wondering. Have you thought about NPC companions like on Secret of Mana or Dragon Age? They could even live at your house!

you should make underwater caves that you can swim through that lead to air pockets and other caves that you can explore. kinda like in the movie the sanctum!
