New Cube World Screenshots

Over the last weeks I've experimented a lot with quests: completely random quests, semi-random quests, pre-written class quests. But I somehow had the feeling that the addition of quests could remove a lot of the freedom and restrict the player too much. I'm also afraid that they could become too repetitive and generic over time. So I decided to leave them out for now and put the game focus on exploration, fighting and character progress, which are in my opinion the most fun aspects of Cube World. Here is an overview of the new features:

- There is now a clearly arranged overview map showing lands and levels. The player can switch between the voxel map and the overview map.

- I've added screens for character selection, world selection, character creation and world generation

- Each class has access to three different types of weapons
* Warrior: Great weapons, dual-wielded one-handed weapons, shield + one-handed weapons
* Rogue: Daggers, fist weapons, longswords
* Spirit Mage: Staffs, wands, bracelets
* Ranger: Bows, crossbows, boomerangs

- There are now groups of NPC adventurers wandering through the landscapes and fighting monsters, just like the player. Some of them are bad and will attack the player.

- Cities have now different districts and there are class trainers

This is the character selection screen. The number of character slots is not limited.

Here is the character creation screen. The background is different with each new game.

This is the world selection screen. Each character can enter each world.

Here is my character in-game. It's a ranger, specialized at sniper. In the final game, specializations won't be available from the beginning. Also abilities will be unlocked one after another which each level.
As a sniper I can lay down and become stealthy. The view gets zoomed in, too. With this ability I can perform powerful stealth attacks, similar to a rogue. However the effect ends when I move.

Alpaca!

This is the world overview map, showing the different lands. The blue lands are oceans, green lands are of my level, and red lands are higher level. Lower level lands would be gray.

Here's a group of nice NPC wizards.

Hey, there's Pixxie. :D

Let's go to that castle.

We must be careful not to pull all enemy groups at once.

I just found a crafting formula. I can learn it and craft that amulet whenever I have the right materials.

Here we nearly wiped because we got attacked by multiple groups at once.

This is the boss. 3.. 2.. 1..

Fire!

See that Pixxie clone in the background? The boss has summoned it. Each boss has random special abilities like this.

Even enemies can drink. :)

Yes, we made it!

We have leveled up, so let's travel to one of those LVL 2 lands.

Let's defeat that cyclops before.

Cyclopses fight with hands and feet now, and have new special abilites like this charge attack. He can also do a cyclone attack. Trolls still use big maces and have an earthquake attack.

We've reached the frontier to the LVL 2 land. It's a snow land!

Let's see if the vendors have better equipment.

Some mountains can cet really high.

Here's a desert land.

This is the ranger master. Here I can learn new abilies and practice them with aims.

Some exploration pictures...

Here's a group of evil Lizardmen.

The frontier between two lands.

A group of Orc adventurers.

A rare ogre. Rare creatures drop a spirit when you defeat them.

These orcs are camping over there. Fortunately they can't see me.

I just got a boomerang!

The boomerang follows the movement of the crosshair.

It hits enemies multiple times. It's my favorite ranger weapon. I'm planning to add throwable metal disks, too.

Well, restricting the class to a weapon type also take the freedom away from the player. You could just add class, that are good at some points and bad at another ones, but the player should be free to build his own build of skills, weapons and other. Just my idea :)

I'd rather see this game be in development for two more years than have you give us a rushed and quickly packaged release tomorrow.

Don't give in to the crowds of people begging for a release or a alpha/beta. You don't owe anyone anything and should keep up exactly what you are doing.

Take your time man, it looks amazing. :D

Hello Wollay!

Thanks for these great screenshots and new features. I wonder if You could answer one of these questions:
- How do you feel? How does Pixxie feels? Everything's all right?
- How's the progress of the official website?
- Can you piont in which quarter of 2013 do you plan to release alpha/beta client/server?
- Will you add a possibility to sleep near campfire? There would be a chance that monsters will attack you when you will be asleep.
- What happens when there are 2 ppl on the server and olny one goes to sleep?

Got many more questions but I won't post all of them in single comment. If you like my questions I can ask more of them. Just tell me :D

Oskar Emil said...

it isn't even released yet so i guess it's some kind of pre-alpha? :)

Dariusz B said...

Wollay would you add modder's support to the game? Game itself is for me full of modding potential. So if you haven't thought about it, i'm sure a lot of people would be interested in.

Randy Phillips said...

Being that you have random NPC adventurers, it might be kind of cool to have them randomly team up with you if you help them kill a monster, and then maybe randomly leave at a city or just not heal and die. Just to kind of give a feeling of more players or something. Just an idea.

Jack said...

What are the servers gona m
be like, MMO?, Private servers? Please answere, it will make me sleep at night

Bosak said...

Oh my god! BOOMERANGS I <3 them so much! Keep up the good work! I usually don't buy games, but when you release this one I will DEFINATELY buy it!!

Arnan said...

Weapons should not be restricted to classes... Sure a rogue with a bow would suck. But to deny the weapon at all? No... I'm not in the business of carrying a gun, but I can still buy a gun and try to use it... Wouldn't it make more sense to limit peoples ability to use weapons by %?

ARcher gets all the perks and cool stuff when using bows, rogues/warriors/whatever can only go so far and their aim will always be shaky. Etc.

Somedudewithagun said...

I totally understand with what your saying and i agree, but the game has been in development for 3 years and he said he would release it last year in like may. Wollay take your time but at least give us a estimate date. For most people that he never seen this game before your most likely making them rage because it is not out. So i love your work and looks amazing so far :)

blk said...

Is there online play, and if there are, how will you play with other people? pre-made servers with a lot of people on at the same time, or can you make private parties so you can play with only your friends?

Ty said...

from the looks of this, it seems similar to the terraria process. Someone makes a server, selects a world and their character, and then others join it.

Brunno dos Santos said...

Hey Wollay, this game will be lanched to OSX too? Or only for Windows?

Ty said...

ive seen games like this and i agree to your statement. But it just makes me uncomfortable being a warrior holding a staff or something.

Alternate Sanity said...

This game looks spectacular, but one thing that I think would make the game last is if you had some way to create custom worlds, and make things like maps for others to download.

It would give people things to look forward to when they've gotten far in the normal game, and it would make the longevity of the game much longer.

Josh Freeman said...

I agree, work on it until it is ready, these impatience kids can learn to wait, great products take time.

I would rather you release it, get some money from it, then continue to patch it with the money you got, and as time goes on, you will keep making money because people will buy it AS SOON AS IT IS AVAILABLE. You can also release expansions and such for some cash, but we need this game. You will be losing customers as time goes on, if you don't give us SOMETHING.

Corey Blue said...

Hmm if you don't wanna do to many random quest, maybe when you update your game you can make Story Arc's for specific NPC characters. You could update whenever you feel as though it's ready and it would be something to look forward too to keep folk's playing.I mean I like the whole random bandit's attacking the village theme and the exploration of random dungeons, that's a really good base for this game, but just add real quest when you think it's ready and maybe get some writers to help you storyboard, have fun with it.I'm really just throwing out idea's,maybe have some kinda cutscene for the story missions.

Oh and another thing I really am still looking forward to some kinda hunger and rest system in the game, and the camp fire the orc's was using, that would great or some kind of temporary stat boost.

Still looking forward to your weather system.

Is it possible you can make the lizard men different tone's of green?

I wanna see the gnoll's and if you changed them or not last time they looked like brown goblins, and I love the Alpaca design it's cute as hell.

(Oh and yes please take your time with this gem.)

Qbin said...

SO EPIC ;O!!!!!!!! Release it ! PLEASE ! ;xx

DualFang100 said...

Also, some websites say it is coming out in march. What do you have to say about this?

Bat said...

It's awesome your work is great! I have a few questions: why its needed to buy new armor, new weaps? why its needed to craft? Will you make a player want to visit the cities not only for trainers and sellers? Will you make it MMO? And the last one, don't you want to make very many limits for visiting locations, like special armor for snowy areas, special armor for deserts etc. And btw, its hard for eyes to look at characters, I think its would be good to make them more detailized

Lorenzo93 said...

Wow very nice work! Plz tell us a release date :(

DrZudsi said...

I say leave questing in the game. Just make it optional. I for one enjoy questing to an extent. But I would get bored of it after a while. At which point I would just play another aspect of the game.

Dale Darwen said...

I've been following this game for well over a year now, and I do have to say that I am pumped. But along with my excitement comes a bit of worry. You mention how questing would take away from the freedom of the game; While I do agree, I fear that the game will only be about leveling and exploring, with no other real content to delve into.

Barkın Doker said...

I agree with you.If we have this game with its final form we will be bored of it quickly. But if we have it soon and we get patches once in a month or something we can return to this game after even if we bored of it.So we can enjoy new things and have more fun.

Poppenboom said...

Thank you! I'm haven't checked twitter often =/

Blake Wyatt said...

Cannot express my feelings in words, the only thing I can ask is WHEN WILL IT COME OUT?! The only thing I know is I NEED THIS GAME AND WILL PAY YOU $100 RIGHT NOW TO GET IT!

Barkın Doker said...

I would love to see party quests

Xaius said...

i suggest a quest bored
although quests get repetitive
it would be nice to have a little bit of an objective (I do love exploring though!)
it would also help skilled players advance faster as they could complete them easier but not have to deal with rpg action as much
i would also love the idea of getting to attack an ogre camp in the middle of the night. (also timed quests would be cool)

Xaius said...

oops i mispelled board...

Xaius said...

oh and other people might not like me saying this but a approximate release date is a bad idea and people take them too seriously

TheAverageMan said...

Wow, the mini map is truly a gorgeous thing. I was thinking that for the wizard you could have a spell book or skull of some sort to casts spells as a weapon.

Haze said...

Amazing work wollay, can't wait for the release!

Check my little blog about indie games:) http://www.indiekings.com/

Belgariad87 said...

This is looking awesome, i knew you were holding back ;) just a couple notes...
PLEASE keep quests. they don't have to be repetitive.
If you are going to restrict weapon access, give classes many types of weapons specific to their class (5 or 6 would be nice)
Even if you don't do the above, still add many different types or ranks of the weapons so that we aren't looking at the same longsword forever with just different stats. make weapons look cooler and more sophisticated as the players invests time and effort.

Codystar55 said...

This looks Amazing!
Will you be recruiting beta testers?
:D

shane3x said...

Instead of 'activatable' quests why not try something like Dynamic events from Guild wars instead? For example you might running around exploring when you come across a little village and overhear a conversation about a son losing something valuable that belonged to his father, You can choose to ignore it entirely and keep exploring, who knows what will happen to the son though or you can go retrieve the item, In one game they may be grateful and reward you, in another the father might get angry his son didnt do it and got an outsider and attack you and get a different reward.

This way people who want a tiny bit of structure get it, people who don't just ignore it and overall you keep the exploration factor of the game plus its like a reward for exploring in addition to finding items and stuff.

Zeb McNeil said...

http://wollay.blogspot.com/2012/01/screenshots-blueprints-mobs-pets.html You should check out the upgrade section of this post. It will show you that he doesn't need to make a bunch of cool looking weapons.

Boblado said...

Looks like you have made a lot of progress to me :) But I won't be able to make a real judgement until a release. Still, I have a question regarding the gameplay; Is weapon customization still a feature? It wasn't mentioned above and to me, apeared to be an unique and important feature.

Noble said...

It's looking great! I have read some comments and I think it's important to remind people how long a company like Blizzard will work on a game (with the giant teams they have) before releasing it. In the end Blizzard makes bank because they have done the best job that they could. To me, it's like saying, "I know the rocking chair you're working on isn't done yet, but I really wanna check it out. Can you just give me one and fix it for me till you have one that's complete?" And more bizarre, it's like saying, "I would really like to give you money for that unfinished rocking chair!" To that I say, "WTH?!"

Justin said...

Wollay, my personal experience with mmo, rpg, or mmorpg games is that random exploring gets old quick. My suggestion would be to have quests as something optional and not actually required, just to give it some story.

Reiz said...

it's fantastic!!We want the game in Italian!!!!

AustinMclEctro said...

Nice update Wollay!
As @facebook-1308807818:disqus mentioned, having a hunger and rest bar/system of some kind would be cool.
HOWEVER, this probably seems a little too hardcore for some people.
Maybe there could be a hardcore mode or something.
Anyway.
Corey also mentioned the idea of campfires.
--> Expand this idea to a small camp that you could create/deploy and pack up as a makeshift home away from home.
I think that would be awesome! (think of tents, lean-tos, tiny cottages, etc.)

Zeb McNeil said...

He may not have talked about it directly, but he does mention spirits, which are the glowing cubes you can put on your weapon, so I would assume it is still in.

Tsx said...

You should add the metal discs for rogues! ;)

#Bored said...

hey wollay, can you leave an option for the ranger to use some sort of melee weapon? like a knife or a dagger? just to help in those tight situations. also, will this be on steam when its released?

Zeb McNeil said...

You are able to lock on to enemies so shooting them with a bow at close range will be just as easy as shooting them at long range. Also, I do believe Wollay has said the ranger will be able to have a move that allows you to roll back real quick.

Anonymous said...

I think an in-game voxel editor would be cool, spatially if you can implement it into the crafting system with some sort of smithing, for the metal disks, a balanced option would be to have them behave like boomerangs, but be able to throw multiple at less damage

Dreadful Skolar said...

I totally agree with Sean Walker.

This game is amazing Wollay, The more I look at the new pictures, I can only imagine how big the game world can be. It is well made and I know you been working on it for 3 yrs, but please, if you need to continue working on it, Do it. Don't give into crowds saying release it now because I really want this game to be successful.

If the game is released perfectly done, the way Wollay sees it done, then it can thrive very well and people will buy the game, no matter how long he takes. Remember that all it takes is for Wollay to ask the right ppl to advertise the game and put it on popular sites with a decent price point and he will make lots of money. Add patches if he feels like it or make it mod-able to give it longevity.

I believe that if a dev is making a game as a hobbyist and not for the sake of gaining money, he should release the game whenever he feels satisfied that it will have a good impact on his reputation. A early buggy game that crashes despite how great it looks will leave customers cheated and unhappy. So take as long as you want, Wollay, you already got my money and I'm sure you will still have those who can't wait any longer.

Anon that wants this game. said...

For the love of god... Just give us the damn game son! Do i really have to throw my damn credit card in your head or something?

Stjornur said...

The thing is, it looks like a pretty finished project now, plus the fact it would actually be pretty damn smart to do a beta test sometime soon, because with coding you can screw up and not notice and then when it's discovered, the developer has to do much more than if they saw the error/bug earlier, which beta testing would help Wollay concentrate on bug fixes.

Michael Borden said...

Disc weapon is a chakram, rogues should get throwing stars or knives, warriors maybe a throwing axe...maybe if this game is about freedom....incorporating some system to manually create your own weapons using multiple weapon types/uses, styles, materials.....so if you had a long staff, you could add an axe head and have a halberd...or an arrow head and have a javelin....something of that nature......also add a bard clas, something support-like

Anon said...

It's also amazing that no one voted you down. This leaves hope that there will be no trolls in this game (at least at the beginning).

Sm[SteeL] said...

So, if Wollay reads the comments: about quests. You can make some editor for players to create them (like developers did in the Space Rangers). So, eventually, there'll be a quite a lot of good quests and no problem with randomizing around the world. (And someone in the comments already said about GW2-ish dynamic events - that would've been great!)

HeyApplebox said...

I think if there were be multiplayer it would be interesting if you could toggle the ability to start with a weapon, or any means of attacking. You wouldn't be able to use them until you either built it yourself, or you reach a certain level. This would make it so that in a deathmatch, the player would be forced to build shelters or defensives, if the world is even large enough, before attacking one another.
Being able to make your own world and having that world also be joinable sounds amazing. Even more so if there could be a level editor(the single best thing you can add) to build and edit with friends. You would be able to build your own fighting arenas or role play any story you create. And as far as making custom servers for pvp, you could just post them in a forum. Cut scenes is another good idea. Though I don't think it would be necessary to have unless there were multiple versions of them for the other possible event outcomes. Please have it work on macs too. Why in the hell isn't there a Kickstarter for this?!

HeyApplebox said...

I don't know how in depth the material system goes. How are the materials recovered? Are they found within chests on these quests? Are they crafted by the player? If the latter, you could create the basic building blocks needed to create your own shelter or even your own armor and weapons could then become craft-able. And to reference back to the level editor being used to make your own adventures, this material system could allow the player to almost fully make their own story filled with their own quests. You could then toggle off other player's ability to collect materials and only use what they are given or find in chests.

he has not been working on it for 3 years.

that would be a lie, the game has only been in development for 1 year, 4 months.

He has his own Youtube channel! With gameplay!

Although i have to agree with some people's comments on taking your time, I still suggest it should be released soon. This is because there maybe some problems that won't be discovered until the game is being played by the mass and to keep adding lines of code might make it worse. Now I am no way trying to judge your coding(the game looks beautiful and it looks like it will work wonders) I am just saying to be careful, good luck.

A wise decision regarding quests. In the single blog post I ever wrote I find the single biggest issue in today's MMORPGs (I know your's isn't one, but close enough) are quests.

The thrown metal disk is a chakarm, commonly used in India, and stayed in use until guns became more powerful. I just wanted you to know.

AdriexDoom said...

No don't learn from diablo 3 it turned out totally bad. In my opinion anyway. But yeah time will only mean quality but there's a point where you have to say good is good.

AdriexDoom said...

That sounds flawless to me. Takes more of a DnD feel and that's always the best. Even more entertaining sometimes when a quest leads to danger instead of reward. I'm thinking this game could use a little hidden conspiracy in its quests. ;) Though it isn't quite the serious atmosphere for certain things.

AdriexDoom said...

I think it'd be interesting to have a weapon for the mages that allow a closer combat feel while still using magic. Kind of the Magic Knight sort of thing but not so far in the combat direction that he can just take over a warriors job. The great thing about weapons is that instead of just a change in visual they are opportunity for a change in play style. Really widens the scope of play. I figure if you can make a close quarters mage weapon then that'll be an interesting choice to give players. I'd like trying that sort of thing anyway. Though there could be spells to enable this play style.

Zeb McNeil said...

I like this idea. It is possible the bracelets could be the close combat mage weapon if Wollay wanted to go that route.

DannTheMann said...

you obviously don't understand. Wollay sees video games as a pure form of art and for that reason he will not release his unfinished piece of art to the world. Do you think Leonardo da Vinci planned to hang the Mona Lisa for public eyes while only the background was finished? I think not!

MiXxXeD said...

I wonder if Wollay will translate this game to other languages, for people with bad english language knowledge.

DualFang100 said...

For the love of god. HE TESTS IT TOO!

Hey Wollay,
have you ever thought about kickstarter? There are many people here that would support you with their money!!!

Kevin Byrne said...

I don't mind if it takes another 2 or 3 years... JUST TAKE MY MONEY NOW! I come to this website like everyday... I wanna be able to stop coming and just have the game appear. I feel like a dog who is sitting and drooling waiting for dinner!!!

It's my problem I know, I just... want so bad. So please. Pre-order and then take as long as you need. I just don't want to have to think about waiting, even though I don't mind it. It's the damn thinking about it!!!

Lucas Melo said...

Meh don't likey the new world map... =/

Agreed, Diablo 3 was a waiting for nothing...

Or do what Minecraft did and add pirate language XD

Wollay, could you make a new video featuring some of these new things? Pictures are nice, but I want more to stave me off until the game is released. :]

Zeb McNeil said...

If you are talking about the ones in screenshots 7 and 21, that is just the overview map that shows the level of monsters in that area, there is still the voxel map that looks the same as always, as shown in the upper right hand corner of most of the pics and it takes up all of screenshot 46.

Austin West said...

Hey great progress wollay! I made a video towards this update and will be making videos of your updates as you progress. I know the audio quality is not good but I am paying for a proffesional microphone soon! Thanks :D. http://youtu.be/nShe5tBtKtA

Bruce K said...

I'm really curious how much money Wollay put into this? I mean it honestly doesn't seem like he spent THAT much money (mostly just time) and look at how this game completely blows most triple A titles out of the water in terms of sheer depth, design, appeal, and polish. When we then add in the factor that this has been built from scratch by just one man i can't help but be completely amazed.

Squwidgey said...

I wanna give the Mole a hug!!! :D The Deserts are great! (havent seen them in a while). Hey I agree with you Bruce K, I cant get enough of the detail in this game.. is this just me or does this game seem more like real life... o.o

Lucas Melo said...

I think the mage should not have a bracelet, you could put a book.
And the rogue should have shurikens or something.

Lucas Melo said...

i know, but the new map looks so... empty i don't know...

Lucas Melo said...

i think he could add everything he want, apart quests... it would make a good beta.

Lucas Melo said...

Maybe you could put some of that board rpg puzzles, like secret switches or item using to open some kind of door that NEED to be open. i mean, just kill and loot quests would be boring.

Lucas Melo said...

AGREED BRO.
i would like to have a bow in hand with my warrior for emergency. or a dagger in hand of my wizard for the emergency of no mana.

I love the idea of a game that is purely based on exploration, but if it will really be all based on exploration, you really need to make sure there will be things worth exploring. My problem with something like minecraft is there are very few world generated things to discover, there is about 4 random structures, the mine sharft and NPC towns to find.

I think this game really needs some kind of way to make randomly generated "dungeons" or "temples". they dont all have to be huge mazes, they don't all have to contain "sweet loot" It's just exciting to find a new kind of building or structure in the world.

about quests. While it may be good to leave quests out, you should consider including "quests" from old ancient RPGs. One where the game doesnt keep track of the fact that you started a "quest". this would also tie in with the many different randomly generated structures or places.

when the area is randomly generated, it will know what kinds of dungeons and caves and structures exist. lets use a cave for example. when this cave is generated, it has a chance to get the "X Flag" now, when the town is made, it checks if any near by areas have the "X Flag" if it does, it will spawn an NPC who will give some kind of cryptic clue about a "legend" of some "cave" containing a powerful treasure. the cave with the X Flag can have a special room that spawns because of the X Flag, that contains a special chest.

Another example would be an NPC saying something like "every time I pass the Johnsons house I hear creepy noises at night... Speaking of the Johnsons, I haven't seen them in a while" now, this again, is an exploration quest. the NPC wont give you a reward, there is no quest journal telling you to "Investigate the Johnsons house at night" its a pure exploration quest. The player goes to the house at night, finds out something like... I duno, they are all ghosts? now. you defeat them and get something from them.

If you really wanted to start making the exploration quests in depth, you can even make it where the ghosts say something to hint that they want the player to help them. the player can either defeat the ghosts, and get some minor reward from their "ghost corpse?" or they run from the house and try to find out what happened.

I just think it would be interesting to have "quests" in a way that equals exploration. the exploration to solve the NPCs message and whatever is at the end of the message is the quest reward its self.

This game is so pretty. Really looking forward to playing, keep up the good work!

On dungeons, it seems there will be plenty of those. In this blog post screenshot 10 shows the outside of the dungeon, the castle in the background, and 11 - 20 show the inside of that dungeon. Also, here is a link to some posts that talk more about dungeon: http://wollay.blogspot.com/2012/03/screenhots-dungeon-entrances.html http://wollay.blogspot.com/2012/02/screenshots-dungeons.html if you are interested.

Weapon restrictions help keep the game balanced as well though. If they weren't restricted, you could easily get out of bad situations. Part of the challenge of class based things such as this is to know your class, its attacks, its weaknesses, etc., then to work with and around them. Were you to have every weapon, you could swap them for when the situation needed, which would always make fights in your favor. For me, that kills challenge and strategy.
